Lucasfilm Lawsuit Put To Rest

Lucasfilm settled a lawsuit over hiring practices with the Dept. of Justice on Tuesday. The DoJ filed a complaint calling on the film, toon and FX powerhouse to stop entering into “anticompetitive” agreements with Pixar that the DoJ said unfairly affected digital animators. The filing included the proposed settlement to end the ongoing suit, pending court approval. The complaint was part of a larger probe by the DoJ’s antitrust division into tech company employment practices. The department asserts that Lucasfilm and Pixar agreed not to cold-call each other’s employees with job offers, to notify each other when offering an employee a job, and not to counter-offer when such an offer was made. The DoJ settlement (to be in effect five years) prohibits both companies “entering, maintaining or enforcing any agreement that prevents any person from soliciting, cold-calling, recruiting or competing for employees.”

Music Box Acquires “Hermano”
Music Box Films has acquired U.S. rights to the Venezuelan sports and urban crime drama “Hermano” and plans a late spring release. Pic, Venezuela’s foreign-language Oscar submission, tells the story of two young men raised as brothers in a Caracas slum who must overcome the violent law of the streets to become professional soccer players. “Hermano,” directed by Marcel Rasquin, premiered at the Moscow Film Festival in June and won the top jury prize and the audience award.

As If Hearing Our Prayers, MGM Eager To Move “Bond” Along
Now that MGM’s has completed its restructuring with $500 million in fresh funding, one of the top priorities is to renew James Bond’s license to kill. MGM may turn to Sony for co-financing, as it did on “Casino Royale” and “Quantum of Solace,” or sell off some of major foreign territories. MGM has been working up plans for a 2012 yearlong commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the first Bond pic, 1962’s “Doctor No,” so the studio will probably move as quickly as possible to lock down Daniel Craig and to secure a director. Sam Mendes has long been rumored to be the leading candidate to helm.

Sony Picks Up Remake Rights To German “Robber”
Sony has bought the English-language remake rights to Austrian helmer Benjamin Heisenberg’s “The Robber.” Deal was a low-figure development buy for Sony. Based on author Martin Prinz’s source tome, “Der Rauber” tells the real-life story of marathon runner Johann Rettenberger, known as “Pump-gun Ronnie,” who made a hobby of robbing banks. The Austrian-German thriller, which unspooled in competition at this year’s Berlin Film Festival, had its German bow in March. Laura Ziskin will serve as producer on “The Robber” retread. Sony has yet to announce a director.

This is a brand new movie streaming site Disney is trialing meant to appease younger viewers used to watching content online and compliment Blu-ray and home video purchases. Disney plans to strike exclusive partnerships with retailers such as Wal-Mart to offer free digital copies with the purchase of the video of "Toy Story 3," reports the LA Times. Enter in your "magic codes" to view your free copy, in perpetuity. Or build your cloud-based "My Movie Library" of rentals ($3.99/for 48 hours of Aladdin) and purchases ($14.99 gets you unlimited access to "Air Bud Golden Receiver.") A total of 180 movies and 172 rentals are currently available on the site to "Watch Instantly," to borrow a phrase popularized by Netflix. Of course, that competitor has a huge head start in getting its content to connected TV devices — a component Disney will have to catch up with if it wants to see any real usage here.
Look Out, Hulu! Netflix Wants to Add Current TV Episodes to Its Streaming Service
According to reports, Netflix is bound and determined to add current episodes of hit TV shows to its Web streaming service, a move that is already causing network executives to quiver in their boots. It’s bad enough that Netflix put a dent in the home video rental business, all but putting the final nails in Blockbuster’s coffin; now it’s scaring Hollywood with the prospect of becoming a streaming giant. Netflix is in talks with the studios about gaining access to current episodes of primetime shows and is willing to pay between $70,000 and $100,000 per episode. The company currently streams older episodes of such shows as “Nip/Tuck,” “Veronica Mars” and “The Family Guy,” and recenly cut a deal with NBC Universal to stream “Saturday Night Live” the day after it airs on the network. One of the issues that concerns the studios and the networks is ownership of streaming rights. The studios say that they control the rights, since they create the shows. On the other hand, the networks, which broadcast the shows, claim that they own the rights — and are worried about lost revenue from advertising and syndication if their shows are easily streamed. It looks like another unforeseen battle in the brave new world of online technology, another battle that no one saw coming — and one that will cause a lot of pulled hair (and lost revenue) before it’s resolved.

Funnyman Steve Carell may be checking out of “The Office” soon, but he’s not leaving the workplace (or NBC). It’s been reported that he’s just sold a half-hour single-camera comedy to the network. According to reports, the comedy is provisionally entitled “The Post-Graduate Project.” It’s described as “a sweet and nostalgic take” on Carell’s own early post-college life, during which he worked as a mail carrier in Littleton, Mass. Carell has always said he quit after only a few months when his boss told him that he wasn’t a very good mail carrier. The new comedy will center on a small-town post office frequented by a quirky but tight-knit group of local twentysomethings. Carell will serve as both writer and executive producer, alongside fellow “Daily Show” alum Thom Hinkle. Carell’s own Carousel Television will produce the comedy with Universal Media Studios where it’s in the middle of a three-year overall deal.

ankruptcy, Leo the Lion’s aiming to become a major player again — with Carl Icahn very much a part of its future. MGM, which has released only one film this year, is on track to begin full-fledged operations in as little as two weeks. U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Stuart Bernstein approved MGM’s “pre-packaged” plan of reorganization on Thursday in Manhattan; MGM can now emerge from Chapter 11 by mid-December with $500 million in cash available, once it secures a JP-Morgan Chase loan. With Spyglass Entertainment toppers Roger Birnbaum and Gary Barber in charge, MGM’s expected to seek a separate loan of $265 million-$275 million for its share of the back-to-back “Hobbit” movies. Icahn, who owns 18% of MGM’s debt and 33% of Lionsgate, agreed to support the reorganization plan after it was revised to exclude titles from the Spyglass library — a move that reduced Barber and Birnbaum’s stake in the new MGM from 5% to less than 1%. Icahn’s also been given a board seat on the nine-member board. How MGM spends its funds will be a concern for showbiz for months to come. The most likely candidate will be the 23rd James Bond movie, with Daniel Craig in his third outing as 007 — the studio will be under some pressure to release a pic in 2012 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the first Bond pic, 1962’s “Doctor No.”

Universal’s Lowriders Projects Finds Its Director
Ricardo de Montreuil will helm the untitled Lowriders pic for Universal. Brian Grazer is producing through his Imagine Entertainment shingle with Cheo Hodari Coker penning the script. Fox Takes Over “The Three Stooges”
With MGM in the final stretch of its Chapter 11 reorganization, “The Three Stooges,” one of the longest-gestating high-profile projects in Hollywood, is in the process of finding a new home at Fox. The extraction from debt-riddled MGM is in the midst of final dealmaking, but upon completion Stooges will land at Fox with the long-involved Farrelly Brothers behind the camera. The cast that had been slapped together for the movie while it was at MGM — Sean Penn as Larry, Jim Carrey as Curly and Benicio del Toro as Moe — is likely to morph into a new configuration, although that too is being figured out. For Peter and Bobby Farrelly, taking the project to Fox would be a homecoming, since the brothers have made most of their movies for the studio. “Stooges” is not a biopic but a fictional treatment that maintains the Stooges’ gleeful slap schtick updated for a modern milieu. It has been a passion project for the Farrellys, who have been involved with it since C3 Entertainment Inc., the keeper of the Stooges brand, sold the feature rights to Warner Bros. in March 2001 for them to write and produce.

Samuel Brett Williams’ “The Revival” Is Headed to the Big Screen
Keith Perkins and Dominic Inzana have optioned the film rights to Samuel Brett Williams’ Off Broadway play “The Revival,” and they’ll produce an adaptation through their newly launched banner Naked Faith Entertainment. “Revival,” about unconventional redemption, centers around a chance meeting between a young drifter and a disaffected preacher that threatens to disrupt a small Southern town. Williams is set to pen the adapted script. His play, produced by Project Y Theater, recently concluded its run in Gotham.

PZI Jeans success in Los Angeles model search
It’s been reported that Frank Darabont, executive producer of AMC’s hot new show, “The Walking Dead,” has fired — or “let go” to put it more politely — the entire writing staff. What’s more, he’s apparently considering not replacing them for Season 2, instead assigning scripts to freelancers. So what’s up? While writer turnover between seasons is not unusual, even for a hit show, mass culling on this scale is distinctly unusual. However, according to the episode breakdown, the Season 1 staff writers may not have been earning their keep. Out of the total six episodes, Darabont wrote two — the pilot and follow-up — and either co-wrote or re-wrote the other four. And of those four, one was written by exec producer Robert Kirkman and the other by “HawthoRNe” alum, writer/producer Glen Mazzara. The system of using freelance TV scriptwriters is commonplace in the UK, where the Writer’s Guild of Great Britain is not as ubiquitous or powerful as its US counterpart, The Writer’s Guild of America. “The Walking Dead” execs may have a fight on their hands with the Writer’s Guild if they try to forgo a writing staff. With Season 2 not premiering until October 2011 there’s plenty of time for prospective writers to get to know their zombies and polish those resumes!

Netflix To Stream FilmDistrict’s New Releases
Netflix said yesterday that it will have the rights to stream movies from recently created FilmDistrict shortly after they are released on DVD and before they go to pay TV. The deal, while small, provides more evidence that Netflix is focused on eventually making its streaming business a competitor to the entrenched providers of movies through satellite and cable TV connections. FilmDistrict is the company founded by Graham King, the Oscar-winning producer of “The Departed” and “Blood Diamond,” which are two of most popular movies among Netflix subscribers. FilmDistrict is run by CEO Peter Schlessel along with president of film distribution Bob Berney and president of acquisitions and operations Adrian Alperovich.

CBS Films has tapped Lionsgate exec Wolfgang Hammer to replace Bruce Tobey as chief operating officer. The division, which just released “Faster” as its third title with $13.3 million in its first week, made the announcement Wednesday evening in a statement from president and CEO Amy Baer. Hammer’s responsibilities will include acquisitions, finance, legal and business affairs, including co-productions and international distribution. He’ll report to Baer. Hammer was exec VP of Lionsgate’s motion picture group. Tobey will depart at the end of the year and is expected to move into producing.

Blixa Sues Thrillhouse Over “East Of Sunset” Title
Blixa Films is the latest Hollywood company trying to use trademark law to stop someone else from releasing a film with the same name. Blixa, which produced the 2004 documentary “East of Sunset,” filed a lawsuit on Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court to prevent Thrillhouse Prods. from using the “East of Sunset” title in its own upcoming documentary. According to the complaint, Blixa’s “Sunset” is a music-based story set in the Silverlake neighborhood of Los Angeles, featuring a number of indie rock musicians performing works composed by Tom Waits. Thrillhouse also has an alt-rock music-themed documentary in the works, as described on a website. Blixa is asking a judge for a restraining order to prevent Thrillhouse from using the title, “East of Sunset.”

Ben Foster And Giovanni Ribisi Join “Contraband” Cast

Ben Foster and Giovanni Ribisi are in talks to join Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale in the thriller “Contraband” for U. The Working Title production is a remake of the Icelandic pic “Reykjavik-Rotterdam” and is being directed by Baltasar Kormakur who also co-wrote, produced and starred in the original. The pic follows a security guard played by Wahlberg, who after running into some financial troubles decides to go on one more smuggling run. Foster will play Wahlberg’s brother-in-law while details on the character Ribisi would play were not disclosed. Tim Bevan is adapting the script with Wahlberg, Eric Fellner and Stephen Levinson producing. Production start date is set for January 2011.

Channing Tatum Bound For “21 Jump Street”

It’s official: Channing Tatum is joining Jonah Hill to star in Columbia Pictures’ “21 Jump Street.” The studio made the announcement Tuesday morning. Tatum will also join Hill as an executive producer on the project, which will be directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Hill wrote the treatment with Michael Bacall, who wrote the screenplay. Neal H. Moritz will produce the film with Stephen J. Cannell, who will receive posthumous credit. “Jump Street” was a hit show in the early days of Fox Broadcasting and featured a group of young-looking cops who infiltrated high schools as students in order to stop crime.

Brandon Camp On The Lookout For The New “Benji”

Walden Media wants to put scruffy but lovable canine Benji back on the bigscreen. The Fox-based shingle, behind such family fare as the “Chronicles of Narnia” franchise, has paired with Brandon Camp, son of “Benji” creator Joe Camp Jr., to write, direct and produce a pic that will reboot the character for a new crop of young moviegoers. Camp will begin a nationwide search to find a dog and hopes to partner with a rescue organization to “screen test dogs in pounds,” he said, because the original Benji, a dog named Higgins, was a pound puppy. Camp had been thinking about reviving the “Benji” brand for years. With the majors increasingly focused on well-known pop culture icons from a generation ago for remakes, Camp said he felt the time was ripe “from a business point of view.” Brandon Camp retains all rights to the Benji character on behalf of his family.

Ruben Flesicher Becomes Director of “Gangster Squad”
Ruben Fleischer is going gangster. The “Zombieland” director will helm Warner Bros’ period cop movie “Gangster Squad,” pending working out where to fit a sequel to Columbia’s hit zombie movie. “Gangster” is based on a seven-part Los Angeles Times article written by Paul Lieberman centered on how in the 1940s, amid corruption and chaos, the LAPD created a unit called the Gangster Squad to keep the East Coast mafia out of the city. Dan Lin and Kevin McCormick are producing while Lin Pictures’ Jon Silk is co-producing. Will Beall wrote the latest draft. Going period, and more dramatic, will be a new road for Fleischer, who hopped from the $24 million-budgeted contemporary undead action-comedy “Zombieland” to “30 Minutes or Less,” his upcoming action comedy starring Jesse Eisenberg and Aziz Ansari. The move will also open up Fleischer to a bigger budget range and bigger stars.

Ricky Gervais and Emily Blunt Join “Muppets” Ensemble
Ricky Gervais and Emily Blunt are the latest high-profile celebrities to join the growing list of cameos in Disney’s new “Muppets” movie. The duo are joining a lineup that includes such names as Alan Arkin, Jack Black, Billy Crystal, Zach Galifianakis and Jean-Claude Van Damme, all of whom have bit parts in the story which sees the Muppets reunite to put on a show in order to save their movie studio from a developer. James Bobin is directing the pic, which is currently shooting in various locales around Los Angeles. Jason Segel, who wrote the script with Nicholas Stoller, is the human lead while Amy Adams, Chris Cooper and Rashida Jones are among the human actors in key roles. The roles the duo are playing are being kept under wraps.

The Clash Gears Up For A Big-Screen Gig

Scribe Jez Butterworth, whose recent credits include “Fair Game” and “The Last Legion,” is joining forces with Mick Jones and Paul Simonon of The Clash to make a feature pic about the band entitled “London Calling.” Pic, which is skedded to lense in 2011, is produced by Alison Owen and Paul Trijbits through their shingle Ruby Film and Television. Butterworth is also producing alongside Ruby while Jones and Simonon are acting as advisors and exec producers, and have granted exclusive rights to the music. The story, which Butterworth is writing with the support of the recently shuttered U.K. Film Council, will follow how music bizzer Guy Stevens (who advised The Who early in their career) steered the punk band into the rock-n-roll hall of fame with their hit album “London Calling.”

http://www.boxee.tv/box
The middleman in the TV business is about to feel the threat of an up and comer. Media center maker Boxee finally starts shipping the Boxee Box by D-Link a couple weeks ago and the two are hosting a big shindig in New York to celebrate. Boxee has also struck a partnership with online video platform Ooyala to give publishers a way distribute and monetize HTTP-formatted TV content to the device using its Backlot TV video solution. This means that indie programmers will now have an easy way to get their shows seen on television either for free with ads, as a subscription or as PPV offerings. The system operates a full paywall with TV Everywhere-style authentication that is seamless for the producer. Now at $200, the Boxee Box is not going to exactly fly off the shelves. And it's just one of a dozen devices designed to bring broadband content to your home set; even Apple has yet to drag its Apple TV box beyond the "hobby" stage. But consider the Boxee Box an important evolutionary step that will reignite much enthusiasm among indie producers and tech-savvy early adopters. Boxee, which counts about 1.4 million PC and Mac users today, sees its brightest future in having its software pre-installed on broadband-connected TVs, Blu-ray players and game consoles. If it can manage to become as ubiquitous as, say, the Netflix streaming app, things could get interesting. The United Football League (UFL) is the first Ooyala publisher to begin "boxcasting," distributing a full slate of league games through a UFL Boxee app.
Lionsgate has kicked off its campaign in its battle against Carl Icahn, urging shareholders to back the minimajor’s slate for the board of directors. The shareholders meeting has been set for Dec. 14 in Los Angeles with Lionsgate asked shareholders to approve its slate of 12 nominees. Icahn, who owns 33% of Lionsgate, has put up five nominees — including veteran film exec Chris McGurk — and asserted that the current board hasn’t improved shareholder value.

Guess Who Will Be Hosting the Oscars? It’s Anne Hathaway and James Franco!
In an unconventional bit of casting, James Franco and Anne Hathaway have been selected to co-host the 83rd Academy Awards. Oscar telecast producers Bruce Cohen and Don Mischer announced the choice Monday. While the Oscar broadcast has been most often turned to a stand-up comedian, the show has occasionally reached out to a wider range of performers: The 59th Awards, in 1987, for example, were hosted by Chevy Chase along with Goldie Hawn and Australia’s Paul Hogan. Both Franco and Hathaway have made previous appearances on the Oscars.
Hathaway joined host Hugh Jackman for a song-and-dance number two years ago, and Franco, who has shown off his hosting skills on “Saturday Night Live,” has appeared as a presenter.

Fox Sues Aspiring Screenwriter for Posting Scripts Online
Twentieth Century Fox is taking aggressive steps to keep its movie and TV scripts off of the Internet. The studio has filed a lawsuit alleging roughly $15 million in damages against a New York woman, Patricia McIlvaine, who is said to have put up roughly 100 scripts online without authorization. On her personal website, McIlvaine describes herself as a “struggling screenwriter who sells flowers over the phone by day and writes scripts by night.” She says she collected scripts that were already posted on the web and made a free online library of scripts in order to assist other screenwriters. She’s already soliciting donations for a legal defense fund.

This site (with the tagline: fuel for your digital life) purports to be the first site to combine a social network with a multi-platform app store, profiling applications for all manner of smartphones, tablet devices, eBook readers and social networks (well, Facebook and Twitter, anyway.) The site offers open reviews, chatting and member profiles along with Foursquare-style badges and profiles to reward frequent contributors. The site, enabled by cloud computing and global payment platforms, maintains its own virtual currency, "App Credits", that you can use to buy apps, ringtones, etc. The idea has merit if it can help worthy apps get noticed, but involving a middleman in app purchases (for real money) is not always comforting.
Today’s Most Shocking Story: Lohan Dropped From Lovelace Bio Pic

“Inferno” director Matthew Wilder is moving ahead with his biopic of porn star Linda Lovelace without actress Lindsay Lohan in the lead role. “We are withdrawing our offer from Lindsay Lohan,” Wilder said. “We are currently in negotiations (with another actress) and working out the legalities of bringing her on board.” Ultimately Wilder said the issue came down to “the impossibility” of insuring the actress “and some other issues.” Lohan has been in and out of jail and rehab over the past year and is currently living at a sober living facility in Rancho Mirage, Calif. The actress’ replacement is expected to be announced shortly.

“Zombieland” Writers About to Add “Director” to Resumé
Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick must be obsessed with the dead. The writers, who made a killing with “Zombieland,” have become attached to make their directorial debut with the comedy “Doc and Howie,” which Montecito Picture Co. is producing. TV writer-producer Steve Leff penned the original screenplay, which landed in the top dozen “most liked” reads on last year’s screenwriter Black List under its original title, “Doc and Howie Whack a Granny.” Montecito hopes to start production by early summer. The film is likely to be released by Paramount, where Montecito has its first-look deal. In the story, described as being in the tone of “Harold and Kumar,” the title characters accidentally kill an elderly woman when they neglect to help her carry her groceries up the stairs. In a fortuitous twist, the incident brings them into contact with the woman’s hot granddaughters, and they struggle with the dilemma of whether to tell the women the truth.

No Liam Neeson? No Problem! Day-Lewis In as Spielberg’s “Lincoln”
Though Steven Spielberg’s Abraham Lincoln biopic had been delayed for the past couple of years, with Liam Neeson originally slated to play the 16th President of the United States before eventually dropping out because, as he suggested, “I’m past my sell-by date,” it looks like things have finally turned around with today’s announcement that Daniel Day-Lewis has signed on to play Lincoln in a film that will “focus on the political collision of Lincoln and the powerful men of his cabinet on the road to abolition and the end of the Civil War.” The plan right now is to begin filming late next year for a release during awards season in 2012.

Leo’s Getting His Conspiracy On With JFK Thriller
Leonardo DiCaprio will star in and produce the feature “Legacy of Secrecy,” based on the book about the John F. Kennedy assassination by Lamar Waldron and Thom Hartmann. DiCaprio will produce through his Warner Bros.-based Appian Way banner with his father, George, who brought the book to his son’s attention. Warners is eyeing a possible 2013 release of “Legacy of Secrecy” coinciding with the 50th anni of President Kennedy’s assassination. DiCaprio is expected to play FBI informant Jack Van Laningham. The book — whose full title is “Legacy of Secrecy: The Long Shadow of the JFK Assassination” — asserts that Mafia godfather Carlos Marcello confessed to Van Laningham to having ordered JFK’s assassination. As part of a dangerous and long-secret undercover operation, the FBI positioned Van Laningham to become confidant to Marcello, who ruled organized crime in Louisiana and most of Texas for decades.

Brad Pitt Wants To Bring Chilean Miners Ordeal to the Big Screen
There’s something about people being trapped underground that brings in audiences in droves. When baby Jessica fell into that drain pipe in 1987 and spent over two days caught inside, everyone was glued to their sets to see if she would be freed. Just two years later, they all saw the whole story fictionalized for a television movie with Beau Bridges, Roxana Zal and Will Oldham. Now we’ve got the Chilean miners, who are a group of men that were recently trapped underground after part of their mine collapsed, managing to survive for a stunning 69 days before they were rescued. Being an impressive story — and one where everyone happened to live, which is a nice, happy-ending bonus — Brad Pitt and his Plan B Entertainment are eager to bring the story to the big screen. According to reports, Pitt’s shingle is in talks to buy the rights to the story, and that some of the miners might be negotiating roles for themselves in the production. A lawyer representing the miners has stated that the 33 miners have been swamped with proposals for their story, and that Pitt has entered the fray with a multi million-dollar offer after visiting the country on a few occasions. It looks like they are interested in Pitt’s proposal, though they want to form a holding company so that the pay is equally distributed amongst each of them.

Disney has already turned theme park attractions into movies such as “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Haunted Mansion.” Now it’s one step closer to turning the entire park into the basis of a movie. Jon Favreau is set to direct “Magic Kingdom,” Disney’s project centered around the Disneyland theme park in which attractions and characters come to life. The deal is a development pact for Favreau and the studio, which will now take steps to find a writer to reshape the original script by “Battlestar Galactica” showrunner Ron Moore. Whether it becomes Favreau’s next movie will depend on the script’s development, although the director, who is in post on next summer’s “Cowboys & Aliens, doesn’t have anything officially slotted. Among his other projects in development are “Me and My Monster” and “Johnny Zero,” both set up at Columbia. Strike Entertainment Marc Abraham and Eric Newman are producing “Kingdom.”

Hancock to Helm “Boy Genius”
Disney hasn’t been shy in saying that “The Blind Side” should have been made by the Mouse House. Since the feel good football drama scored a touchdown at the box office, the studio has locked down Gil Netter, one of the pic’s producers to a first-look deal, and has now hired its helmer, John Lee Hancock, to direct “Electric Boy Genius.” The deal is the latest sign of how Disney is aggressively zeroing in on talent it wants to work with, since Rich Ross and Sean Bailey took over the studio. In addition to launching more Marvel superheroes, adding DreamWorks pics to the pipeline, and bringing back the Muppets, it’s tapped Tim Burton, Sam Raimi, Guillermo del Toro, David Fincher and Robert Downey Jr., among others, to shepherd or headline high-profile projects. Doug Wright (”Quills”) is penning the script for “Electric Boy Genius,” based on a GQ article, published in 2002, that profiles Ryan Patterson, a wunderkind of electricity who won the Intl. Science and Engineering Fair in 2001. Andrew Corsello wrote the story.

MGM has filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York a financial-reorganization plan naming Spyglass Entertainment co-toppers Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum as co-CEOs of the Century City studio. The “prepackaged” Chapter 11 bankruptcy plan was approved last week by more than 100 MGM lenders, who agreed to swap $4 billion in debt holdings for a collective 99% stake in the Century City studio. The final terms contain certain changes demanded by investor Carl Icahn, a big MGM debtholder. Court review of the plan is expected to take 30 days. Icahn will end up with a sizable stake once his $400 million-plus in Lion debt is converted to equity. He also had been backing a rival MGM restructuring plan involving a proposed merger of MGM and Lionsgate, in which he also is a major investor with a stake of abut 30%.

Kevin Turen and Robert Salerno also are producers. “Arbitrage” stars Pacino as a hedge fund magnate who is in over his head and desperate to complete the sale of his trading empire to a major bank before his fraud is revealed. But an unexpected, bloody error forces him to turn to the most unlikely corner for help.

With MGM debtholders facing a fast-approaching deadline, Carl Icahn’s made another offer to MGM debtholders — his third approach to that group in a week. The Icahn offers are designed to block a proposed pre-packaged bankruptcy deal that would leave Spyglass Entertainment in charge of the Lion. MGM debtholders, who hold about $4 billion in debt, must decide whether to back the Spyglass plan by today. Icahn disclosed Wednesday that he’s been buying MGM senior debt at a price of 50 cents on the dollar and has obtained a “substantial” amount. The billionaire investor said he’s seeking to acquire an aggregate of $500 million in senior loans. MGM had no immediate response.

IFC Midnight, the genre division of IFC Films, has snagged North American rights to “Dream Home,” the Hong Kong slasher pic helmed by Pang Ho-Cheung. Real estate-rage thriller, which bowed in the U.S. at the Tribeca Film Festival, centers on a young woman who goes to murderous lengths to be able to afford the house of her dreams. Josie Ho stars. Film is targeted for a theatrical and VOD release early next year.

Clooney Gets the Money for “Ides Of March”

Exclusive Media Group and Cross Creek Prods. have stepped forward to finance and co-produce George Clooney’s “The Ides of March.” They will join Clooney and Grant Heslov’s Smoke House and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way, which are producing. Clooney is directing and starring in the film, which is based on Beau Willimon’s politically themed play “Farragut North.” The pic also stars Ryan Gosling, Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood. Clooney and Heslov have adapted the screenplay with Willimon. Clooney is set to play Governor Morris, a candidate running in the presidential primary race for the Democratic Party ticket, with Gosling cast as his press spokesman. Giamatti plays a rival campaign manager, Tomei appears as a New York Times reporter, and Wood plays an intern for the campaign.

Eugene Levy Teams Up With “Goon”
Eugene Levy (”American Pie”) is set to star opposite Seann William Scott, Jay Baruchel and Liev Schreiber in Michael Dowse’s indie laffer “Goon.” Baruchel and Evan Goldberg penned the script, which was inspired by Doug Smith and Adam Frattasio’s book “Goon: The True Story of an Unlikely Journey Into Minor League Hockey.” Myriad Pictures, which handles foreign sales, will launch the pic at the American Film Market, which gets under way next week in Santa Monica. Alison Pill also stars. Pic revolves around a slacker and born brawler who’s invited to join a minor league hockey team. Persuaded by his best friend to accept the offer, he becomes the hero of the team — until the league’s reigning goon decides to take him down.

Kiwis Rejoice! “The Hobbit” To Stay In New Zealand

With production due to start in three months, “The Hobbit” is finally home in New Zealand — following a vitriolic dispute underlining the high stakes of mega-budget tentpoles. Wednesday’s settlement came at the end of a bitter one-month firefight with actors unions over a boycott that provoked Warner Bros. and director Peter Jackson to threaten to move “The Hobbit” to Europe or Australia. Making the deal required the intervention of New Zealand prime minister John Key, who announced at a press conference that he’d sweetened the terms enough for Warner Bros. to stay. Among other concessions, the studio was given a larger production subsidy. Key said his government plans to introduce legislation aimed at clarifying a key issue involving the use of independent contractors and employees in the film industry — even though the actors had called off the boycott a week ago and pledged that they wouldn’t disrupt “The Hobbit.” The NZ Actors Equity reiterated that pledge on Wednesday.

The ensemble cast includes Morgana Davies, Jacek Koman, Dan Wyllie, Sullivan Stapleton, John Brumpton, Callan Mulvey and newcomer Finn Woodlock. “The Hunter” is being produced by Vincent Sheehan through his Porchlight Films shingle with funding from Screen Australia.

Posey in the Pocket of New Yoga-Flavored Indie

Indie comedy “Sunny Side Up” has begun production in Boston with a cast that includes Parker Posey and Christy Scott Cashman, who penned the screenplay. David Pomes (”Cook Country”) helms. Cashman also co-produces with Michael Mailer and Galt Niederhoffer, the writer-director-producer who wrote and helmed “The Romantics,” based on her own novel. “Sunny Side,” which will incorporate elements of improv, centers on a yoga guru (Posey) from the city who brings her entourage to a chicken farm in the country and attempts to co-exist with the farmers there.

Coppola to Make His Return By “Sunrise”

When the director behind “The Godfather,” “The Conversation,” and “Apocalypse Now” has his last two films — 2007’s “Youth Without Youth” and 2009’s “Tetro” — pretty much slip under the radar, what does he do? He slips right back, by quietly casting Val Kilmer as a horror novelist in a new thriller and filming it on his own Napa property. Francis Ford Coppola is already shooting “Twixt Now And Sunrise,” according to reports. Joining Kilmer in the cast is Elle Fanning (fresh off Sofia Coppola’s “Somewhere’) and Bruce Dern, and little is known about the plot beyond it being based on Coppola’s own short story.

Lynch To Bring “Visability” To Audiences
Jennifer Lynch is set to direct scribe Allan Loeb’s supernatural thriller “Visibility” for Motion Picture Corp. of America. MPCA is eyeing a February start. A supernatural thriller in the vein of “The Sixth Sense” and “Primal Fear,” “Visibility” centers around a detective whose search for the identity of a trauma-induced amnesia victim reveals a mysterious connection between the two men.

Aronofsky Signs Up to Direct “Machine Man”
Darren Aronofsky continues to fill out his dance in the wake of the buzz he is generating from his “Black Swan” supernatural drama. While he waits for his deal to close to direct “Wolverine 2,” the filmmaker has signed on to develop and direct “Machine Man,” a cybernetic thriller for Mandalay, which sees him reunite with “Swan” co-writer Mark Heyman. Machine is based on a partial manuscript by Max Barry that Mandalay picked up last year. Aronofsky and Mandalay will work with Heyman to adapt the book for the screen, in the hopes of making it his project after he shoots “Wolverine 2.” Cathy Schulman will produce via the Mandalay banner.

From the mind of Peter Denton, previously featured in this space as part of our Innovator series, this site just launched what it's calling a recommendation engine, designed to let you know which movies you should be seeing based on what your friends and loved ones have seen and enjoyed. It's hooked in to both Facebook and Twitter, which means that if any of your friends have discussed the movie or mentioned it at all, you'll hear about it. Also, your profile will let you know which of your friends have "liked" a certain flick, just to keep you in the know. Peer pressure was never quite this helpful.
Elijah Wood Arrives at FX in “Wilfred”

Elijah Wood is coming to FX in “Wilfred,” which just received a 13-episode series order. Based on an Aussie comedy, “Wilfred” stars Wood as Ryan, a socially awkward introvert who meets Wilfred (Jason Gann), described as part Australian Shepherd, part Russell Crowe on a bender — except the rest of the world sees Wilfred as a dog, while Ryan sees him as a man dressed in a dog suit. Fiona Gublemann co-stars as Jenna, Ryan’s next door neighbor and Wilfred’s owner. David Zuckerman is the writer-exec producer. Executive Producers are Rich Frank, Paul Frank, Jeff Kwatinetz, Joe Connor and Ken Conner.

Ang Lee’s “Pi” Casts the Film’s Hero

Fox 2000’s bigscreen adaptation of Yann Martel’s tome “Life of Pi” is at last rowing off to sea, with Ang Lee set to start lensing the fantasy adventure early next year. After a worldwide talent search, Lee has cast 17-year-old newcomer Suraj Sharma in the iconic title role Fox will release the pic Dec. 14, 2012. Gill Netter is producing “Life of Pi,” which will be a large-scale, all-audience film. “Pi” tells the story of a boy who is lost at sea for 227 days in a lifeboat with three unusual and increasingly hungry companions–a bengal tiger named Richard Parker, a hyena, a zebra and an orangutan. He’s left stranded in the tiny boat after the ship carrying his family and his family’s zoo sinks, and must find a way to survive.

Of Course Tony Scott Will Be Back for “Top Gun 2″
Previous speculation about a potential sequel to 1986’s “Top Gun” has understandably focused on the possibility of Tom Cruise returning as dog-fighting pilot Maverick. But now director Tony Scott has weighed in, and his vision for “Top Gun 2″ sounds like a much more grounded adventure. While promoting his runaway train flick “Unstoppable,” Scott confirmed that he is set to direct the “Top Gun” sequel, though it won’t be his next picture and, in fact, there’s no script yet, much less any further word on Tom Cruise’s involvement. Scott wants to explore the end of the fighter jet pilot era, as aerial warfare transitioned to ground-controlled drone aircraft. Evidently the director is fascinated by the idea of “computer geeks” playing war games, safe in a Nevada trailer, and then partying all night.

Ingrid Betancourt and Ex-Husband Duel Hollywood Style

The Kennedy/Marshall Co. has acquired rights to Ingrid Betancourt’s recently published book, “Even Silence Has an End: My Six Years of Captivity in the Colombian Jungle.” On Sunday, a spokesperson for producer Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that work is under way on a script based on the book, which is Betancourt’s story about what happened while she was held and her eventual rescue in July 2008. Separately, Los Angeles-based Venezuelan-American writer-director Betty Kaplan has acquired rights to two books written during Betancourt’s captivity by Juan Carlos Lecompte, who was her husband. His Spanish-language books — “In Search of Ingrid” and “Ingrid y Yo: A Sweet and Sour Freedom,” tell the story of his love and the search for Betancourt throughout her captivity.

Screens Will Be Attacked By “The Doberman Gang”

“The Doberman Gang” may be coming back, thanks to “Dog Whisperer” Cesar Millan. The canine trainer’s teaming with producer Darren Reagan, who’s secured remake rights to the three-film series about an animal trainer who uses a pack of Dobermans to pull off the perfect crime. “The Doberman Gang” opened in 1972 with the six dogs named after bank robbers — Dillinger, Bonnie, Clyde, Pretty Boy Floyd, Baby Face Nelson and Ma Barker. “The Daring Dobermans” was released in 1973, followed by 1976’s “The Amazing Dobermans” with Fred Astaire, Barbara Eden and Billy Barty. Millan will serve as a producer on the project, but it hasn’t been decided if he’ll appear in the film.

Are You Ready for “ACME: The Movie”?
Kevin and Dan Hageman have sold an original pitch to Warner Bros. that could very well explode in their faces. The Hagemans came up with the idea to build a feature film around the fictional ACME warehouse — the manufacturer of anything and everything used by many of the “Looney Tunes” characters, most fatefully Wile E. Coyote in his quest to catch the Roadrunner. The writers developed the concept with producers Dan Lin and Roy Lee and hope to build a franchise out of the Warner property (the company owns Looney Tunes).

Caution! Uwe Boll Has a New Movie

Uwe Boll is back at it. “Blubberella” is writer/director/doctor Boll’s new and unfortunately titled action film, which presumably chronicles the violent adventures of its full-figured namesake. The titular heroine will be played by Lindsay Hollister, an actress who has worked with Boll before (she survived “Postal”), and even Boll understands the value of someone who’s willing to work with him more than once. Hollister — to her credit — is a successful actress in her own right, and has appeared in such films as “Get Smart” and “A Cinderella Story,” as well as a number of prominent TV shows.

Hilary Duff Signs Up for a Little Indie Action
Hilary Duff has joined the cast of indie pic “She Wants Me,” which has just commenced lensing in Los Angeles and Gotham. Pic, which is the second directorial effort from helmer-scribe Rob Margolies, follows the tale of a neurotic writer Sam, played by Josh Gad, who is making his next feature film and becomes conflicted after Duff’s A-list starlet character shows interest in playing the lead role, which he has already promised to girlfriend and struggling actress, Sammy, played by Kristen Ruhlin. Pic is produced by Stonebrook Entertainment’s Danny Roth. Mark and Christine Holder from Zero Gravity Management will also produce.

Longtime “Family Guy” talent Alex Borstein is stepping into the spotlight at 20th Century Fox. The writer and voice of Lois on Fox’s animated hit has made a sweeping overall deal with the studio to develop, write and executive produce two pilot scripts in which she might appear. One is an animated project, the other a live-action comedy. The studio has made a talent holding deal that would allow for other writers to develop projects for Borstein and for the studio to cast her into an existing project.

“Sex and the City” alum Kristin Davis is attached to star in and produce a laffer for NBC and Universal Media Studios about a woman’s year-long quest to become happier in her life. “Chuck” scribe Kristin Newman is in talks with the studio to write and exec produce the pilot. The single-camera project is based on the real-life experience of Gretchen Rubin, a former law clerk for Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, who embarked on a quest to explore the nature of happiness while writing a book, “The Happiness Project,” that was published by HarperCollins in January. Rubin also launched a related blog, happiness-project.com, that piqued Davis’ interest. Davis will serve as a co-exec producer on the project.

After months of speculation and a seemingly endless list of names, the James Cameron-produced remake of the 1966 minor sci-fi classic “Fantastic Voyage” has landed a director: Louis Leterrier, the man behind the lens of “The Incredible Hulk” and this year’s “Clash of the Titans.” Details may change, but the basic plot of the remake should be the same as Richard Fleischer’s original film, following a team of scientists as they’re miniaturized and injected into a human body to perform a life-saving procedure. Naturally, things go horribly wrong and adventure happens. Although Shane Salerno’s script is currently undergoing “minor revisions” courtesy of “Avatar” producer and “Shutter Island” writer Laeta Kalogridis, Cameron is hoping to get the film rolling by early next year, which is an unusually short amount of time for a production with the name James Cameron scrawled on it. If this is the case, a director needs to be signed quickly. After all, that little thing called “pre-production” needs to happen.

It’s Official: After “War Horse,” It’s “Robopocalypse” for Spielberg
Steven Spielberg will direct futuristic drama “Robocalypse” for DreamWorks and begin shooting in January 2012. Disney will distribute the films through its Touchstone label in 2013. Spielberg has been directing World War I epic “War Horse.” Disney and DreamWorks will release the film Aug. 10, 2011. “Robocalypse,” based on the novel of the same name by Daniel H. Wilson, explores the fate of the human race following a robot uprising. Drew Goddard has penned the adaptation. DreamWorks acquired feature rights to Wilson’s unpublished manuscript in November. Doubleday has publishing rights and will release the book in June.

So, Keeping It Straight, It’s Mel Out, Liam In on “Hangover 2″
Liam Neeson will replace Mel Gibson as the tattoo artist in “The Hangover 2.” Gibson was cast then let go from the part, described as “pivotal” to the movie by those who have read the script. While the original movie revolved around a Las Vegas bachelor party that devolves into a drunken lost weekend, the follow-up tracks the same stars — Bradley Cooper, Zack Galifianakis, Ed Helms and Justin Bartha — on a misbegotten trip to Bangkok, Thailand. The tattoo artist is one of the characters the guys need to track down during their adventures. The character is described as “crazy” and “intense,” “someone you’re afraid to talk to.” It is unclear if the part will be altered to incorporate the sensibilities of Neeson. It was Cooper, who starred with Neeson in this summer’s “The A-Team” that was instrumental in getting Neeson the part.

“SATC” Director Nabs Holy Trinity of Actresses for New Flick

Talk about female star power: Meryl Streep, Sandra Bullock and Oprah Winfrey are attached to star in “Sex and the City” creator Michael Patrick King’s untitled comedy project, just set up at Universal Pictures. King will write and direct the comedy, described by the studio as being “set in and around the world of a Home Shopping-type network and follows the characters as they make their way through the maze of mania that surrounds marketing, marriages and the media.” Scott Stuber will produce through his Universal-based Stuber Pictures.

inger’s “Beanstalk” Re-Imagining Gets the Green Light
New Line Cinema has just given the thumbs up to director Bryan Singer’s “dark version of the classic fairy tale of Jack and the Beanstalk.” How dark? Well, it’s currently titled “Jack the Giant Killer.” So much for subtlety. Nothing else is confirmed, but rumors say it will be shot in 3-D (well, yeah) and that Aaron Johnson (”Nowhere Boy,” “Kick Ass”) is a favorite for the lead.

Get Ready for a “Bones” Spinoff
Though “Bones” creator Hart Hanson said last week that he’s in the middle of developing a spinoff from his hit show, there’s one catch — we haven’t met the spinoff character just yet. Hanson is definitely behind the potential new series, which, like its predecessor, would be based on a book series. The spinoff would follow Walter Sherman, an eccentric man who can locate anything and the main character in Richard Greener’s “The Locator” series. The yet-to-be-cast Sherman would know Booth from Iraq, and while he’d clash with the FBI agent, he’d intrigue Dr. Brennan.
