Universal Finds Pair to “Throw Rocks” at Book Adaptation

Universal Pictures has tapped Dannah Phirman and Danielle Schneider to adapt Todd Harris Goldman’s book “Boys Are Stupid, Throw Rocks at Them!” Studio optioned the sarcastic advice tome and has attached Walt Becker to produce. The scribes, who honed their comedic skills as members of L.A.’s Upright Citizens Brigade group, are also working on original music and lyrics for the pic. The 80-page book, which is accompanied by Goldman’s illustrations, offers a tongue-in-cheek look at boys as seen through the eyes of girls.

Worthington Set to Go Off World Again in “Dare”

“Avatar” star Sam Worthington will be playing the title role in the film adaptation of “Dan Dare.” Warner Bros. recently closed a deal for the feature rights to the British property. The character, created by Frank Hampson, first appeared as a comic in 1950 and centered on a gallant chief pilot of the Interplanet Space Fleet. The story took place in the ’90s, with Dare exploring planets presumed to have extraterrestrial life. “Dan Dare” was later adapted for radio and television. Worthington has been attached to the project for several months. Basil Iwanyk, who worked with Worthington on “Clash of the Titans,” will produce the project under his Thunder Road banner.

Eisner’s Brilliant Graphic Novel Finally Coming to the Screen

Legendary comic book master Will Eisner’s groundbreaking “A Contract With God” is being adapted into a live-action feature film. The book, one of the first graphic novels, was released in hard cover and paperpack by Baronet Books in 1978, and focused on the immigrant struggle in New York City, across four separate but related stories, set primarily in a tenement in the 1930s. The four segments are: “A Contract With God,” “The Street Singer,” “The Super” and “Cookalien.” Four independent directors are attached to direct each of the chapters: Alex Rivera (”Sleep Dealer”); Tze Chun (”Children of Invention”); Barry Jenkins (”Medicine for Melancholy”); and Sean Baker (”Prince of Broadway”). The film will be produced and adapted by Darren Dean, whose first feature, “Prince of Broadway,” about an illegal immigrant in contemporary New York City, is being released this fall.

Producers Putting Together Horror Flick We Will Totally Watch

Treasure Entertainment, in assocation with Highland Myst Entertainment, is aiming to bring together a host of high-profile horror actors in “The Gathering,” led by Doug Bradley, Udo Kier and William Sadler. Producers Mark Heidelberger (”Harsh Times”) and Jesse Felsot are in talks with Robert Englund (the original Freddy Krueger) and Linda Blair of “The Exorcist” to join the project, set to go into production late this year or in early 2011. Jon Keeyes (”American Nightmare”) has been tapped to direct from Carl Kirshner’s script, set up as a horror anthology containining half a dozen stories. The pic’s framing story, “The Storytellers,” is set on Halloween night with the devil bringing together Edgar Allan Poe, Bram Stoker, H.P. Lovecraft and Mary Shelley in a competition to tell the most frightening untold tale with the winner receiving the opportunity to leave purgatory forever.

The End for M. Night? We Think, Um, Not
With this past weekend’s release of “The Last Airbender,” there have been a fair amount of epithets hurled in the approximate direction of writer-director-producer M. Night Shyamalan, along with the general pulling of hair and gnashing of teeth about how horrible the movie is and how, after a string of lousy films, this is, indubitably, the end of his career. Well, pardon us, but we’re going to have to call shenanigans on this one.

Want to know what we're talking about? Click the link to read on:

It’s Not ALL Bleak: WGA Announces Earnings Went Up in 2009
Hollywood scribes saw a 12% rebound in earnings last year — recovering much of the 15.4% financial hit that they took in 2008 from the double whammy of the recession and the 100-day strike. The Writers Guild of America West, which sent its annual report to its 8,000 members this week, disclosed that total earnings covered by WGA contracts hit $931.4 million in 2009, up $100 million from 2008. That gain, the report noted, was fueled largely by “strong” earnings by TV writers. Despite the salary increases, the number of writers employed declined last year by 11 slots to 4,328. And guild leadership took pains to point out that the number of writers getting paychecks has declined by 4.7% from 4,542 in 2006 — the most recent pre-strike year. In the report, guild leaders touted the gains in the template for new media compensation contained in the agreement with employers that settled the strike, which lasted from Nov. 5, 2007 to Feb. 12, 2008.

Get Ready for More BBC Stations in the US

BBC Worldwide is to bow more TV channels in the U.S. in the next 12 months as part of its strategy to derive two thirds of its income from outside the U.K. by 2012. Revenue for Worldwide’s channel biz grew by 16.4% last year, from £225.6 million ($341.2 million) to £262.6 million ($396.9 million), according to the company’s annual report, published Monday. Profits for the division, which includes cable web BBC America, were £39.2 million ($59.2 million), up more than a third on the previous year’s £29.2 million ($44.1 million).

There Might Soon Be a Resolution to the Polanski Case

Swiss officials are nearing a decision whether to extradite Roman Polanski to the U.S. to face prosecution in a 1977 sex case, according to a report. A Justice Ministry spokesman said “it won’t be long” before a decision on the extradition request. In April, a California appeals court denied Polanski’s attempt to end the case. Polanski’s attorneys had been asking for the director to be sentenced to time served. Swiss authorities had said at the time they had been awaiting the decision by the court on Polanski’s appeal before deciding whether to extradite the director. He is under house arrest in the luxury resort of Gstaad. In early May, Polanski broke many months of silence to blast Swiss and U.S. authorities over attempts to extradite him to face sentencing on child sex charges. Polanski has been held in Switzerland since being arrested in September for possible extradition for sentencing in the case. The director, who pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful sexual intercourse, spent 42 days in at a California state prison in Chino during a psychiatric evaluation, but fled the country on the eve of final sentencing by Judge Laurence J. Rittenband in 1978.

Another Debt Extension Request Coming from MGM

MGM soon will request a sixth postponement of its big debt and interest payments as the Century City studio seeks to restructure its finances and possibly tap a new CEO. Lenders holding nearly $4 billion in Lion debt are expected to agree to the extension, though nothing is guaranteed and a full-press effort continues to finalize a restructuring proposal sought by the lenders. The studio formally will request the latest extension about a week before the July 15 deadline on a $250 million principal payment and $200 million-plus in owed interest. That could buy MGM at least several additional weeks to flesh out financial details of its corporate restructuring. But a proposed business plan, likely involving a corporate partnership with another film company, would help sell yet another extension of the debt forbearance to a frustrated group of more than 100 lenders. As usual, there’s a ton more about this over at the Hollywood Reporter, so for the full skinny, click the link and read on.

cahn Strengthens His Position Vs. Lionsgate

As Carl Icahn’s stake in Lionsgate balloons to nearly 40%, bizzers and Wall Streeters are perplexed about the maverick investor’s next move and what the ongoing drama means for the company. Icahn needs to acquire 12% more of the company to become its controlling shareholder. It’s expected that Lionsgate brass will have no choice but to try to negotiate a settlement that will likely involve giving an Icahn rep at least one seat on the company’s board of directors. Icahn has promised to launch a proxy fight to replace Lionsgate’s 12-member board and oust toppers Jon Feltheimer and Michael Burns. The completion of Icahn’s hostile $7 a share tender offer for the minimajor, which expired midnight Wednesday, had left him a with 33.9% stake in Lionsgate. On Thursday, he acquired an additional 4% of the company by buying 4.64 million shares on the open market at $7 a share, bringing his total holdings 44.8 million shares, or 37.9%. Lionsgate responded Thursday evening by announcing a poison pill that will be enacted if Icahn’s stake hits 38 percent. The “shareholder rights plan” — approved by its board — makes a takeover prohibitively expensive by issuing one share purchase right to each outstanding common share of Lionsgate as of the close of business on July 12.

Gyllenhaal’s “Crossroads” Casts Another Pair

Stephen Gyllenhaal, father of Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal, is better known for directing television episodes than feature films, but that may soon change thanks to his political comedy, “Grassroots.” The film, which is an adaptation of Phil Campbell’s memoir “Zioncheck for President: A True Story of Idealism and Madness in American Politics,” had already assembled an interesting little cast (Jason Biggs, Joel David Moore, Lauren Ambrose, Tom Arnold, Cedric the Entertainer, Christopher McDonald and Emily Bergl), and has now added two more: DC Pierson (one of the founding members of “Derrick Comedy,” star of “Mystery Team,” and author of “The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep and Never Had To”) and Cobie Smulders (”How I Met Your Mother,” “The L Word”).

“Mad Men” Bad Girl Going Pro for “Aliens”

Abigail Spencer, the tempting bad girl of AMC’s “Mad Men,” will take her wiles to the big screen in the Jon Favreau-directed sci-fi adventure “Cowboys and Aliens.” The actress, who played Don Draper’s mistress on the ’60s-set series, will play a prostitute in the wild West story about cowboys and Indians who join forces to fight off invading aliens. Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde, Harrison Ford and Sam Rockwell have already been cast in the film, which is shooting in Sante Fe, N.M. and is scheduled for a July 29, 2011 release. Spencer’s character will be a former lover of Craig’s character who makes him change his ways.

Another Actor Swings for the Fences, Joins “Moneyball”

Stephen Bishop (”Lost”) will suit up as David Justice in “Moneyball,” the film adaptation of the 2003 nonfiction novel by Michael Lewis (”The Blind Side”). Film tells the story of Oakland Athletics GM Billy Beane (Brad Pitt) and his strategy for building an A-list team without paying his players enormous salaries. The cast also includes Robin Wright, Jonah Hill and Philip Seymour Hoffman. David Justice was a longtime member of the Atlanta Braves, and played his final MLB season in 2002 for the A’s, who made the playoffs that year.

When Will It End? “Scream 4″ Cast Keeps Growing!
Alison Brie has joined the ensemble cast of “Scream 4,” which recently began filming in Michigan under the direction of Wes Craven. Brie will be playing the role of Rebecca, the personal assistant of Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), who secretly envies her boss’s reluctant fame and fortune. If the size of the cast is any indication, the fourth installment of the horror franchise could potentially have quite a high body count, as Brie joins an ensemble that already includes David Arquette, Courtney Cox Arquette, Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Rory Culkin and Anthony Anderson.

Gershon Spins for Indie “Five Minarets”

Gina Gershon, Danny Glover and Robert Patrick will lead the cast of the indie film “Five Minarets in New York.” The movie is the English-language debut of Turkish writer-director Mahsun Kirmizigul, whose previous film, “I Saw the Sun,” was Turkey’s foreign-language film Oscar submission last year. Gershon will star as Maria, the wife of a Turkish scholar who is arrested by federal authorities after being wrongfully accused of a crime.

Project Updates
Meet The New Peter Parker: Spidey Casting Announced!
Sony Pictures confirmed late last week that actor Andrew Garfield has landed the coveted role of Spider-Man/Peter Parker in the studio’s upcoming franchise reboot. The news ends months of casting rumors, which involved nearly every young actor in Hollywood, from Jamie Bell (”Billy Elliot”) to, most recently, “Kids Are All Right” co-star Josh Hutcherson. Garfield has acted in only a handful of films, including last year’s “Red Riding” and “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.” He can next be seen in David Fincher’s “The Social Network,” about the founders of Facebook. Marc Webb (”(500) Days of Summer”) will direct the untitled project, which, according to Sony, will hit theaters July 3, 2012, in 3D. James Vanderbilt wrote the screenplay.

Sci Fi Shingle Wins a Big Prize: Rights to a Heinlein Classic

Harry Kloor’s Jupiter 9 Prods. is developing a feature version of Robert Heinlein’s “Have Space Suit, Will Travel” with Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Peter McHugh attached as producers. Kloor, who founded Jupiter 9 to promote science literacy, obtained film rights after presenting a finished script to the Heinlein estate. Set in 2040, “Space Suit” tells the story of a teenager who loses a contest for a free trip to the Moon, but wins a broken-down space suit — which contains properties that lead to humanity’s first contact with aliens.

Nash Nabs “Kid” Writer’s Script, Enters “Dreamland”

Nash Entertainment is going to “Dreamland,” developing a biopic about the man who popularized baby incubators from a script by Christopher Murphey (”The Karate Kid”). Nash Entertainment president Bruce Nash and feature film chief Robert Kosberg will produce. “Dreamland” is centered on Dr. Martin A. Couney, who operated the attraction of the same name at Coney Island from 1903 to the early 1940s. Couney began his work in the late 19th century in Germany at a time when premature babies were usually expected to die. Couney died largely forgotten in 1950. Nash came up with the idea for “Dreamland” after seeing a doc about Coney Island, noting a key event involving little people who put out a fire at Dreamland.

Krevoy’s Shingle Set for “Departures”
MPCA has nabbed U.S. remake rights to the Japanese film “Departures,” the surprise foreign-language winner of the 2008 Academy Awards. The company, which was co-founded by Brad Krevoy, secured the rights from Japanese production company Sedic. “Departures,” which has pulled in more than $75 million in Japan, centers on an unemployed cellist who retreats to his hometown and accepts a position as a mortician, where he learns the Japanese art of encoffinment. MPCA is already at work on the U.S. remake of another Japanese hit, “Yomigaeri,” which is being developed by DreamWorks under the title “Rainbow Bridge.”
